Aberdeen Music Hall is currently undergoing a transformational redevelopment and is due to re-open towards the end of 2018, during Scotland’s Year of Young People (YOYP). The Stepping In project is a nine-month-long arts programme in schools and communities across Aberdeen city and Aberdeenshire, starting from January 2018, and including music, dance, drama, storytelling, film. The programme for the opening season will also be developed with the help of young people. A series of participatory projects including community choirs, music making and storytelling in the lead up to Stepping In will enable over a thousand young people from local communities to contribute to, and be part of, this fantastic celebration. This will lead up to a celebratory community re-launch of Aberdeen’s much loved Music Hall, when participants will showcase their work in the new hall.
Stepping In is aiming for two exciting weekends of celebration and will be commissioning Associate Artists to produce work to showcase over these weekends.
• Weekend 1: first up, a free-for-all; an open-doors day for everyone to witness the transformation and enjoy tasters of performances throughout the building. This will include both Stepping Out and Stepping In commissions of Associate Artists with lots of opportunities for local talent to come to the fore.
• Weekend 2: the following weekend will be a gala weekend of performances with concerts each night profiling the range of musical delights we have in store over the coming years: classical, traditional and contemporary concerts.
A key objective of the Music Hall redevelopment is to secure its future for the next generation and to create a welcoming, accessible and animated environment, the go-to destination for young people in the North-east.
Co-designed for the YOYP 2018 by the city’s very own young people, Stepping In will be filling the transformed ‘A’ listed building with performances, participatory opportunities, activities, artist commissions and heritage information.
Dates to be confirmed – please check back on this page or Aberdeen Performing Arts for more information.
